Why I Wrote The Heirloom Journey- And What You’ll Learn About Paying for Long-Term Care

October 21, 2025
Geoff Hoatson

Before I started practicing elder law, I saw missteps in my own family that caused my grandparents to lose almost everything. And now, after practicing in this area of law for over 15 years, I’ve seen too many others make the same heartbreaking mistakes: they waited too long to plan. By the time clients come through our doors, they’ve been drained- both emotionally and financially- trying to figure out how to afford long-term care without losing everything they’d worked their whole lives to build.

That’s why I wrote The Heirloom Journey.

This isn’t just another book about legal strategies. It’s a roadmap for families navigating one of the most difficult seasons of life- when a parent, spouse, or other loved one needs nursing home or assisted living care, and the costs are staggering.

In The Heirloom Journey, I walk readers through:

  • The real cost of long-term care (and how quickly it adds up)
  • Why Medicare won’t cover it (and what to do instead)
  • How Medicaid planning works– yes, you can protect assets legally
  • The tools you need now- powers of attorney, trusts, long-term care options, and more
  • Stories of real families who’ve made it through this journey with peace of mind

Want the story behind the book?

In Episode 8 of the Elder Law Out Loud Podcast, I share why I wrote The Heirloom Journey, and the common fears, questions, and roadblocks I see every day when families face the high cost of long-term care.

Episode 8 | The Heirloom Journey: Why I Wrote The Book About How To Pay For Long-Term Care
Whether you’re a caregiver, a concerned adult child, or a professional working with aging adults, this book and episode will give you clarity, options, and hope.

A Final Thought

You don’t have to spend down everything. You don’t have to “just accept it.” And you don’t have to navigate this alone.

The Heirloom Journey is my way of putting the most important guidance I’ve learned from thousands of cases into your hands so you can protect your legacy, preserve your dignity, and take the next step with confidence.

Thank you for letting me be part of your journey.
