Hello, my name is Geoff and I’m the founder of the Family First Firm. I am writing this manifesto to provide some extreme clarity about this organization. Specifically - who we are, what we do, and how we do it. I also am writing this as a warning about who we are not, what we don’t do, and the type of person who will not make it here.
I used to talk to our new potential employees about these things in their initial interviews. However, as this firm has grown, I rarely meet people before they are hired and I want to be clear about these tenets from the outset. If you don’t feel like this describes you or you are willing to commit to these requirements, that’s totally fine. I never ask people to change - you should always be who you truly are. However, you may not be able to be that person at Family First Firm, and that’s okay. I’m sure there is an organization out there that is perfect for you.
I want to start with what we are building towards. My vision for the Family First Firm is to be the organization that is making a significant, generational impact in the lives of seniors and their families. This means that because we are doing our job well, we will be setting entire families on a new trajectory. People will be buying houses for the first time. Children will be the first members of their families to attend college. These are just a couple of examples of the many generational changes that we are making on a daily basis at the Family First Firm.
However, It isn’t enough to want to help seniors and their families: we must provide an unparalleled client experience along the way. Now, as a foundation, we do the regular things that should be expected. This means answering calls. Calling people back. Doing what we say we are going to do when we say we are going to do it. (Have you ever had the cable company set a time to come to your house? They tell you between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00 and then they have the audacity to show up at 6:30! You are livid and you have every right to be. We DO NOT do that to our clients.) Those are the basics. But to provide an unparalleled experience, we have to go beyond the basics. We use our clients’ names - or their preferred titles - every time we speak with them. We don’t wait for clients to ask for an update because we are proactive with our communication. We look for the solutions to their problems instead of focusing on the roadblocks. We find reasons to celebrate with them. We get personal with them - learning about them and connecting on a deeper level. We treat them with respect and admiration. Ultimately, we treat our clients like family because they are literally feeding our families. It’s important to remember that every paycheck we receive is paid by our clients who have trusted us to help them get through a major challenge in their lives. Our goal is for every client who hires us to rave about our firm to their friends and family. Every phone call, every zoom, every email - every interaction with our firm should leave our clients with a feeling of peace because they feel acknowledged and their concerns addressed with empathy and a personal touch. We go the extra mile for our clients, no matter what.
And it doesn’t stop there, because we also have to go the extra mile for this Firm. This Firm provides all of us with this incredible opportunity to make a difference. And while it’s continually growing and getting bigger, it isn’t as big as it feels. This is not a “someone else will handle that” sort of organization. “That’s not my job” does not have a place here.
I know - this is a lot to ask. That’s why we only want people who are passionate about making this level of impact. This is not a job for anyone. It probably isn’t a job for most people. This job is for people who believe in their soul in what we’re doing. People who believe that service to others is their calling. People who understand - unlike most of our society - that seniors are deserving of care and respect. How do you know if this is you? If you’re this type of person, you’re already helping seniors. You might be providing care or help for a grandparent. You might be helping out in your church, synagogue, temple or mosque. You might volunteer with organizations making a difference for people you’ll never meet. There is an old Stoic proverb that says “Society grows great when men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.” That is the type of person who belongs at Family First Firm.
Now, you may be thinking - “this sounds like me, but I don’t know anything about elder law!” Don’t worry. Our goal is to provide you with industry-leading training so that if you’re the right person, you can work here regardless of your prior experience. We will give you the tools to help us build towards the vision. If you are the right person for this organization, I promise you that we will find a place for you here.
So what happens if you manage to get a job here and you don’t believe in this mission? Well, you probably won’t be here for long. And frankly - why would you want to be? Find a job that you can be excited about. Find a job that doesn’t feel like “work”. Numerous people at this firm have mentioned that they are excited about coming to work. They don’t dread Monday mornings - and neither should you.
However, if you’re excited to make a life-changing difference for seniors - welcome to the Family!
