Just because you passed away, doesn’t mean that your mortgage goes away. There is a law in place that prohibits the banks from foreclosing on your homestead property. If it goes to a descendant of yours when you pass away, they can continue to pay on the property, paying the mortgage and keeping it current, and they can continue to live in that property and keep it. Now, of course, if the mortgage payments are not being paid, then the mortgage company can initiate a foreclosure proceeding. But you don’t have to worry about your house being foreclosed on just because you passed away
